So i am really into sad anime series. My vote of saddest is air and kanon takes second. I love the key animation and i have yet to finish Clannad. (i've just started).

I want some suggestions on others.

P.S. I want series. not movies so don't put Grave of Fireflies on here. I've seen it and i frankly didn't cry.

the Samurai X OAV is pretty sad. Trust and Betrayal that is.

I've not seen Air, and Kanon is an emotional rollercoaster but a great flick. One piece, while not a sad anime, has very emotional parts to it, some quite sad. not one to invest in for wanting to watch depressing anime though.

I dunno, samurai X is just a very well done OAV, it might be my number 1 due to the music, scenes, voice acting. just all around

Clannad: after story is really sad for the last half

Nodame Cantabile: has its ups and downs

True Tears: is a pretty sad one, and is pretty realsitic.

Honey & Clover: has its ups and downs also

Toradora!: really funny at the start and gets very dramatic twards the end. ( my fav rom/com)

(movie) 5 cenameters per sec: really good and touching

Aishiteru Ze Baby: very good show, mix of comedy, drama, and learning how to raise a child.

Just as Keke said, Samurai X - Trust & Betrayal is definitely one of the most emotional series. Air, Kanon & Clannad have the same character designer and the series does have some supernatural aspects to it so they seem similar in many ways.

I'm gonna say Rumbling Hearts. Although that anime made me wanna punch someone in the face rather than sad. However, it's because it was sad that I wanted to punch someone. Poor poor decisions...

Clannad turned from the funniest anime ever to a gloomy punk !$! sad one... I was disappointed..

Can't believe no one mentioned, Chrono Crusade... To me that was really sad!

Steph also recommends Fushi Yuugi

ummmm.... Elfen Lied? anyone? why the hell did no one say that?

also, I cried multiple times in Code Geass. Btw, you have no heart if you didn't cry during Grave of the Fireflies.

Yeah, Grave of the Fireflies was pretty sad since it showed flashbacks when the sad part happend then showed the person fading in those flashbacks.

100% fail. FMA is not sad. Sorry. it has sad parts, but sadly.... is not a sad story.

I'd call it about a 60% fail. If it has sad parts, it is slightly valid in putting up here. 100% fail would be Bobobo-bo-bobobo. Actually, that entire anime is 100% fail.
