Welcome to the NHK!

Welcome to the NHK is quite possibly one of the best anime in 2006. This series takes on a much different route than other anime, and tackles a much more darker and a realistic view on people.

The basic premise of the anime revolves around a guy named Satou Tatsuhiro, where he is a hikikomori, a person that is a NEET, meaning "Not currently Employed, in Education or Training". And a girl named Misaki that tries to "save" him.

The story is well written and each episode tackles a serious issue in life that some people would face or at least have seriously thought about in some point in life. It is the struggle that is in every episode that makes the story so enjoyable and the hidden themes and lesson every time is appreciated.

The animation obviously take a much more "dark" and "realistic" look that is somewhat different than the traditional art style, but it fits the whole series quite well; sometimes the quality is not all that consistent, but that's the only downside.(Gonzo needs to learn how to budget their productions!)

The sound is excellent, all of the BGM is memorable and fits into the premise perfectly. Makino Yui is excellent in her role as Misaki and she has really brought out the character in the anime.

Overall, Great series! I can't even think of any anime series that dealt with a social issues so directly. I doubt this series will bring a revolutionary end to the hikikomori status, but hopefully this will bring in some light in dealing with this issue as there is a significant number of Japanese people who has this (I heard it's about 1%; now do the math with the total population in Japan right now).

Verdict: 9.0/10(Welcome to the NHK is a dramatic-comedy. Most of the comedy happens early, especially with the weird glimpses into Satou's mind, but the series takes a more dramatic approach around the middle and second half of the series. Those looking for something to laugh at should devoure the early episodes and pace themselves through the internet suicide arc, as the series as a whole takes a much more serious tone from that point on. Those that want a good drama with some laughs will enjoy this one, especially if they are interested in Japan's societal issues. This was definately one of my favorite titles from 2006.)
